John Emerson is a professional fishing guide equally at home on Midland Reservoirs and winter grayling rivers. John began river fishing for grayling 11 years ago when he openly admits he hadn’t got a clue, he will talk us through the way he developed his understanding of the fish and his approach to catching them. This talk is an absolute must for anyone interested in learning to fish for Grayling with a fly. Remember non members and guests are welcome to attend this talk free of charge. Fly Tying Evening - 23rd January 2006Another enjoyable night that was well attended. It was a chance for everyone to get together and talk fishing. Our chairman John Duffield and others took the students through a few more demanding patterns and some really fishable examples were produced. The tying was interspersed with anecdotes of past experiences fishing the patterns on different waters. Apologies for the lack of photos - I forgot to bring my camera! Guest Speaker - Iain Barr -12th December 2005 One of the highlights of our winter season so far had to be an evening with twice England captain and Trout Fisherman European Champion Iain Barr. The presentation was extremely well attended with a packed hall of both EMTFA members as well as many invited guests. They were not disappointed as Iain continued on from his last excellent presentation with an insight into many of his ideas on fly fishing tackle, flies and presentation.
Iain took questions from the floor and demonstrated his depth of knowledge of tactics on still waters and rivers. He interspersed his answers with interesting and entertaining anecdotes from his many international competition experiences around the world.
The evening was rounded off with Iain giving a fly tying demonstration of his favourite and most deadly fly patterns not only showing how to tie the fly correctly, but also how to present the flies in the most effective way. Anyone who attended the presentation would agree that the evening was not only entertaining and informative but provided some terrific ideas for the new season.. Thanks again Iain. Anyone who wants to know more about Iain and his flies can visit his website at www.iainbarrflyfishing.co.uk Fly Tying Night - 28th November 2005 This night was something of an experiment for this year; tapping into the fly tying experience in EMTFA to provide fly tying newcomers and beginners with one to one tuition of how to tie some of the most popular and effective reservoir flies.
Graham Bodsworth demonstrated how to tie his deadly version of the epoxy buzzer ..
Guidance and advice was then provided while the students had a go themselves. The students all produced a number of excellent representations and tried their hand at varying materials to give different effects. All agreed it was a worthwhile and rewarding experience with everyone keen to try another pattern at the next fly tying evening. Quiz Night 14th November 2005 An enjoyable quiz night at Mowesbury Park was well attended allowing for 3 teams of 5 with John Duffield as quiz master. The Anglian Water Wardens once again showed their terrific overall knowledge of fly fishing by amassing 41 points over 6 rounds. In second place with 33 points was Stevie Rayner's team followed in third by the Old Gits with 21 points. The questions covered a whole range of fishing topics from flies to rivers but also included an hilarious round on rods that never mentioned a Hardy or a Loop, but had pictures of famous 'rods' from the world of cricket and football as well as a dipstick from Only fools and Horses!! The victorious Wardens team cruising to victory The evening was rounded off by John Duffield thanking the Anglian Water wardens on behalf all the EMTFA members for all their help and assistance throughout the season. Stevie's team contemplate why on earth they played the joker on that round!? The pressures on for the Old Gits Oh No!.... The results are in for the Old Gits !!! Change to the date of the dinner The date of the dinner has been changed. It will now be held on the 3rd March 2006 at 7.30pm. The venue still remains the same. Our team of Andy Profit, Tony Dighton, Jim O’Neil and Bill knight caught 15 fish for 30lb 12oz easily beating the second team in our group Soldier palmer “B” who caught 22lb 8 oz.
