| Top Fly at Chew Graham Bodsworth found the top fly at Chew on an afternoon when the fish had become hard to tempt. In the morning we all caught on red holographic Diawl Bachs but in the afternoon Graham changed to a black Diawl Bach with a bright orange hot spot tied in with Fl Fire Orange, uni-thread 70. John Duffield was fishing in the same area as Graham and struggled for pulls. The fly certainly seemed to be what they fancied. To tie the fly tie an ordinary Diawl Bach with brown tying silk and one strand of black died peacock herl. Twist the herl round the tying thread to make a rope, which makes the fly more durable. Tie off the brown silk having tied in the throat hackle. Finish with a bright orange-varnished head.
Patterns used and developed by EMTFA members
Graham Bodsworth: Holographic Buzzer Hook: Kamazan B175 10-12 Body: Black or green tied thread Rib: Silver Holographic medium or fine Cheeks: Pearl Holographic A great buzzer pattern that works from the first day of the season to the last. It can be fished with a traditional team of buzzers, on the bung or with a Minkie on the point.
Mel Parrott: Huge Humungus Hook: Long shank size 4 or 6. Body: Gold fritz. Rib: Gold wire. Hackle: Badger palmered. Eyes: Chain bead, large. A deadly fly that struggles to fit in the gauge but is deadly when the fry are about at the back end of the season.
Pat Sweeney: Black and green lure Hook: Kamazan B175 10-12 Body: Black fritz. Thorax: Green fritz. Tail: Black Marabou. An easy to tie lure that is incredibly effective when fished on an intermediate. Pat used this deadly fly to win the Grafham Open. This simple fly combines two of the most effective colours with stacks of movement to create a great fly.
