Autumn Boat Pairs -

Grafham Water - September 17th 2006

The day started overcast  but the cloud soon cleared with a westerly breeze for a bright warm day. Most anglers headed for the north shore where it was thought the fish were. Jim ONiel's boat partner was unable to make it so   Jim volunteered to fish on his own - a wise move as Jim came in at one o'clock as top rod with 6 fish - all caught by the Chair - so much for the North shore advise! Most were catching either on Nymphs, buzzers or sunken daddies but the fish seem pre-occupied at times and only a lure would do. It was a well attended match that everyone enjoyed not just for the fishing but a chance to catch up with members old and new. See 2006 Competition results for the results.

Rose Bowl Boat Match

Eyebrook Reservoir 25th June 2006

The day was forecast to be hot and sunny and it didn't let us down. There was  some good cloud cover at times with a steady wind so conditions were some what better than expected. The reservoir was alive with natural food, especially damsels and pin fry so the trout seemed to be preoccupied and this was reflected in the number of blanks when we all came off for the BBQ at lunch time. The BBQ was the great success of the day with Pat and Paul doing us proud yet again. Tony supplied some of his renowned  burgers, sausages and smoked trout... delicious and all washed down with a cool beer. With fishing being so difficult it was quite a struggle for most of us to break away from relaxing and chatting in the sun. The afternoon session still found the fishing difficult and although most areas were fished the success rate was pretty much the same. It has to be said that although the fishing was poor this was more than made up for by the brilliant BBQ  the beautiful scenery and great company... all in all a terrific day. Thanks again to Pat, Paul, Tony and Stevie for the raffle.

Spring Boat Pairs

Pitsford Reservoir – 7th May 2006

Another great day out, thanks in no small part to Pat Sweeney and Paul Telling who laid on an excellent mid-day BBQ. The match was well attended and a warm welcome was extended to new member Gary  Jones.

The morning was overcast and threatened rain. Most anglers headed for the Gorse Bush and drifted past the Cliffs and into Brixworth Bay. The Pines were also a hot spot. Bill Knight and Ray Storer fished in the nature reserve side of the Causeway and were soon into fish.

The fish appeared to be quite close into the bank and a little bit down as an intermediate line seemed to do the trick, although a lot of fish were still caught on a floating line. Everyone came off the reservoir at 1.00pm and were treated to an excellent BBQ courtesy of Pat and Paul. Tony Dighton once again provided some of his excellent game sausages, burgers and this year he added a game Pate and Trout Mousse..

With the boats sitting a bit lower in the water everyone headed out in pursuit of more trout, however the afternoon session was not quite as productive as the morning. The rain held off and the sun came out between the clouds causing layers of clothes to be removed. The fish seemed to be mainly on Buzzers , although quite a few fish fell for Crunchers, small nymphs and Blobs.

The Spring Plaque - Spring Bank Competition 2006

Draycote Water - Sunday April 23rd 2006

The first bank match of the season was held at Draycote water. Following a glorious Saturday the forecast for the day was rain spreading in from the west with a south westerly wind . The rain actually held off for most of the day and the  brisk  wind made the Cornfields and Tofts the hot spots. The locals made it to the Cornfields first, so most of the competitors headed for Tofts and faced a useful right to left wind. There was a massive hatch of large black buzzers for all of the day that saw plenty of fish topping all over the reservoir (quite unusual for Draycote). The obvious choice was black or green buzzer reducing in size as many pulls were experienced with little result. The fish were initially quite close in, but as the day went on they moved further out making fishing more difficult. As the afternoon drew on the fish started to move in again and more fish were taken.

The competition was won by Bernard Charnley taking 8 fish for 15lb 1oz all on a small gold head damsel. Second was Pat Sweeney taking 6 fish for 9lb 12oz on buzzers, boobies and Blobs. Third was Paul Telling taking 5 fish for 8lb 1oz on nymphs and buzzers.
